OUR HISTORY

For over forty years, Langley has empowered adults with developmental disabilities by supporting each individual to grow, be independent, and have full access to their local community in a caring community.

Founded in 1983 by members of Trinity United Methodist Church, Immanuel Presbyterian Church, and Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in McLean, VA, Langley sought to provide a supportive community for young adults with developmental disabilities to gain independence as they grow older and foster both a close-knit community within and connections to broader communities across Fairfax County. Our first group home opened in 1985 in McLean, VA, and two additional group homes quickly followed. We expanded in the 1990s by opening our drop-in support program for community members needing moderate help in daily life. In 2010, we absorbed another organization which allowed for the opening of two additional homes to support new people in need.

In 2024, we proudly opened Atwood House, our sixth group home, expanding our residential program capacity to nearly 30 individuals. We now support 40+ adults through our residential and community support program, continuing our mission to empower adults with developmental disabilities through independence and community engagement.

Langley’s dedication to excellence and empowerment has earned us widespread respect and recognition. These honors reflect Langley’s commitment to delivering exceptional care and fostering meaningful community connections.

2011 - Fairfax County Human Rights Commission commended us for our “dedicated service to the citizens of Fairfax County, Virginia in the field of Human Rights.”

2020 - Congressman Gerry Connolly celebrated the legacy of our former Executive Director, Betsy Schatz, in the Congressional Record for her decades of advocacy.

2022 - Our Director of Residential Services, Stephanie Davidson, received the Martha Glennan Disability Inclusion and Equality Award from Fairfax County.

2022 - Langley received the Greater Washington Champions for Accountability badge from the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, in partnership with the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, which “recognizes employers in Northern Virginia that have taken the first step toward corporate diversity.”

2024 - Two of our Direct Support Professionals were honored as finalists at the NOVA Coalition of Service Providers' DSPY Awards in 2024.

Dinner Dance - Who We Serve

WHO WE SERVE

Langley serves adults with developmental disabilities through our residential and community support programs.

Developmental disabilities is an overarching term for often lifelong challenges that can be intellectual, physical, or both (AAIDD, 2012). The individuals we serve have a range of diagnoses, such as Fragile X syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, and intellectual disabilities. Some of the individuals we serve are able to live on their own with minimal support while others need a more supervised environment through our group homes.

Our small footprint allows us to make a deep impact on the lives of those we serve. Some of the individuals in our programs have been with us for decades and have flourished in their time with us. At Langley, we focus on empowering, lifelong care and fostering a beloved community with our individuals.
